Americas’ sailing capitol Annapolis, Maryland, as a colonial city was known as the ‘Athens of America. On the north shore of the Severn River across from present day Annapolis originally called ‘Providence’ was settled by the Puritars fleeing Virginia.
Founded in 1649, the area was renamed Annapolis and become the provincial capital.
Through the 1700s’ the city was a busy seaport, located on Chesapeake Bay, vessels sailed into the port to trade from all over the world.
Today, Annapolis is still a popular port of call for international sailors, also the location of the largest water boat shows in the world.
