Originally called ‘Waterloo’, Austin, Texas, was occupied by the Tonkawa Indians around the time Austin was founded. Renamed after Stephen F Austin and purchased for the capital of the Republic if Texas in 1839.The seat of Texas after this time was moved to Houston and then Washington-on-the- Brazos, Austin only to formally become the seat of Texas in 1846.
Today, Austin is the commercial heart of ranching, poultry, dairy, cotton, and grain producing area, together with manufacturing and defense industries.
