Baltimore, the largest city in the state of Maryland, was settled in the early 17th century. Founded in 1729, the site of an excellent harbor the city became the centre for shipping of tobacco and grain. Baltimore’s history has been influenced largely by the nation’s wars; during 1812 the city’s ship building industry grew greatly.
Known as ‘the city of first’s’, Baltimore has since 1743 been the location of the first professional sporting organization in the United States, and is home to many companies producing ‘first’s’, such as the first silverware manufactured in the united states in 1815 and the first steamboat company in 1840.
