Along the Mississippi river, Baton Rouge was discovered by French explorers in 1699. The French are alleged to have constructed a fort near the area in 1718, to protect travelers. Following this time in 1763 Paris transferred the area to England due to a treaty between the countries and the settlement was renamed. Now New Richmond, the Spanish defeated the English September 1779 at fort butte on Bayou Manchac and then by 1781 west Florida including east Baton Rouge was under Spanish influence.
With 1810 the area was declared independent by local settlers who regained control from the Spanish and renamed the West Florida Republic.
Following Louisiana being admitted into the union in 1812, Baton Rouge was incorporated in 1817, and then chosen as the state capital in 1849.
Today, history is being made in down town Baton Rouge through construction, already home to the pentagon barracks and the nation’s tallest state capitol building there is plenty to learn and see.
