On the hills overlooking the Missouri River North Dakota was firs visited by European explorers and found the area to be home to several Native Americans. The first known explorer to actually visit North Dakota was French-Canadian Pierra La Verendrye who had traveled to Mandan Villages near present day Bismarck. During the 1870’s settlers began to establish towns in North Dakota, Bismarck was founded 1872 and North Dakota’s first railroad reached Bismarck in 1873. The area boomed in 1874 as a riverport, railroad center and gateway for western expansion during the Black Hills gold rush and was finally made the state capitol in 1883.
Today, Bismarck is a ‘city on the move’, Downtown Bismarck is the heart of the city and with its growth throughout all of its industries, Bismarck has a large variety of businesses and services available still holding true to it’s history with it’s preserved historic buildings amongst the view of the Sertona Park system, Bismarck has it all.
