The largest city in the state of West Virginia, Charleston‘s history is rich going back 200 years. The English settled 1670 at Albemarle Point on the western bank of the Ashley River not far from where the Bullitt family was deeded landed near the mouth of the Elk River in 1774, and then sold. Fort Lee, the first permanent settlement was built by Col. Clendenin in 1788 who named the site Charles Town after his father. Much later in 1877 the site was chosen as state capitol.
Industry was discovered in the early 1800’s when along the Kanawha River salt brines were discovered and the first salt well was drilled 1806, later to be followed with the first natural gas well in 1815, and then coal in 1817.
Today, Capitol Street, Hale Street is the centerpiece of Downtown Charleston, with a mix of restaurants, shops, businesses and modern services. Downtown Charleston is the Cultural Mecca for the state of West Virginia.
