Located on the Trinity River, Dallas is the seconded largest city in Texas after Houston. Founded 1841 the area was populated by French artisans and gentlemen. The city was named in 1846 after vice president George M Dallas.
Developing a cotton market in the 1870’s Dallas with the introduction of railroads created an opportunity for the city’s rapid development as a trade centre. With the 1930’s came the oil industry and aircraft production in the 1940’s.
Dallas was home to the infamous Doc Holliday who started out as a dentist before moving on to other forms of employment and also the location of the assassination of the President John F Kennedy in 1963.
Today the layout and summer heat makes touring down town Dallas by foot difficult however visiting places like the memorial site of JFK on Main Street and Market Street well worth visiting via the excellent bus tours available.
