Originally a military fort Iowa’s capitol city, Des Moines’s history ca be traced back to 1834 when John Dougherty an Indian agent for the military, recommended that a military post be established where the Des Moines and the Raccoon rivers merge.
Where the name Des Moines came from is uncertain, many believe the name to be derived from the Indian word ‘Moingona’ meaning- River of mounds, which refers to the burial mounds next to the river. However it is believed the Trappist Monks who lived in huts at the mouth of the Des Moines River were the inspiration behind the name.
Following Fort Des Moines, settlers began locating almost immediately near the fort, which today is the site of Sec Taylor Stadium.
Today, more than 200,000 people live in Des Moines, and the city has gained national recognition as third largest insurance centre in the world with 60 companies.
Des Moines is truly a city of opportunities with the river running through the city there a variety of attractions, services and entertainment all in close proximity.
