Originally occupied by Native Americans, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was settled by Swedish until the Dutch claimed the land. On the Delaware River William Penn acquired the land through a grant from Charles 2nd of England after the British contested the Dutch claim. The ‘city of Brotherly Love’ was intended as a refuge for Peaceable Quakers and founded 1682.
In 1774 it Philadelphia was second only to London as the largest English speaking city, then serving as America’s capitol from 1777 to 1788.
Philadelphia has worn many titles throughout history. Also the location of many historical shrines and monuments celebrating events throughout American Government history, today you can find both ‘independence hall’ and ‘liberty bell’among many other tourist attractions and landmarks.
