Today Pierre is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, across the river the first settlement was Fort Pierre, incorporated in 1883.Pierre served as the trade centre of thee middle Missouri River from 1822 to 1855 following in 1876 to 18885 Pierre became the head for the black hills gold trade with steamboats. With the arrival of a railroad in 1880 the city of Pierre boomed and was an important trading and shipping centre.
Today, Pierre is a tourism and agriculture centre, holding a wealth of businesses, services and natural attractions. There is a lot on offer to residents and tourists alike.
