Portland, Oregon in the Pacific Northwest is located alongside the Willamette River was founded 1845 by Amos Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove who when they were naming the town, flipped a coin, as they both wanted to name the site after their home towns. When Pettygrove won the toss, he chose Portland after Portland Maine. Following 1852 when the town was incorporated, Portland experienced rapid growth serving as a supply point in the 1850’s for the California Gold fields, and then with the arrival of the rail road in 1883, and the Alaska gold rush in 1897- 1900.Also the location of the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in 1905, Portland has a rich history.
Today, Portland has a diverse economy covering manufacturing, distribution and other forms of trade and services. The financial and industrial center for the state of Oregon, Portland with its rich history, beautiful scenery and natural attractions is a great place to spend time.
