Salem, the second largest city in Oregon, was home to the Kalapuya Native Americans more than 5000 years ago, located in the centre of the Willamette Valley, one of the most fertile and agriculturally productive regions in the world. The area was seasonally home to the tribe. The location of natural richness first attracted European- Americans to the area in 1812.Permanent settlement then came with Jason Lee who in 1840 built a Methodist Mission and sawmill in the area. In the late 1800’s the town was laid out, and grew rapidly with the expansion of agriculture and logging.1846 the name Salem was retained for the town and almost ten years later in 1855 Salem was made the official state capitol.
Today, Salem embraces its historic roots, much of the buildings from long ago are preserved. There is much to see and do, and in Historic downtown Salem you can enjoy easy access to its parks and attractions and modern services.
