The largest city in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle was originally home to the Suquamish Native American tribe, the chief, Noah Sealth was one of the founders of the city and later the city would be named after him. Before the city was named Seattle in lat 1852, it had been known as Duwamps. Settled in 1851 Seattle remained a small lumber town up until 1893 with the arrival of the Great Northern Railway. Becoming a boom town in 1897 with the Alaska gold rush, Seattle was the nation’s chief link to Alaska.
Situated between the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges. Seattle is not far from many state and national parks and with numerous art galleries and museums the city is a cultural center. Downtown Seattle is connected to Pacific Science Center and is a cultural and recreational park, by the first publicly operated US monorail. And a short walk from Seattle’s retail district is Pike Place Market, around since the early 1900’s and is known as a must see and the soul of Seattle.
