The area of Thousand Oaks was once inhabited by Chumash people, a Native American and near extinct civilization, whose 2000 year old cave drawings can be seen at the Chumash Interpretive Center. The Land was otherwise was claimed for Spain in 1542 by Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo and became part of the area Rancho El Conejo (currently known as Conejo Valley) due to the vast amount of rabbits that populated the region.
