Washington DC is the Capital of the United States, on the east bank of the Potomac River the state has had many names, known to many Native American’s as ‘Co-hon-ho-roo-ta’, to the Spanish as ‘Espiritu Santo’, the English called it, ‘Elizabeth’ and the Lord Calvert’s Pilgrims,’ St Gregory’. It is internationally known as “Washington”, the state is the only one ever to be named after a President.
In 1791, President Washington, selected the site to become the federal district and named the capital the city of Washington. And was incorporated 1802.
The center of the metropolitan area today, it is also the center of the United States Government leaving little room for industry. Among the industries in Washington are aerospace, software development, both wood and chemical products however tourism is it largest being a major tourism and cultural center. And an extensive subway system connects the city to most of the surrounding suburbs accommodating the huge numbers of people who come to visit, work, live and do business here.
